Bernese Mountain Dog

Along with only the Belgian breeds (Malinois, Shepherd and Tervuren), the German Shepherd, and the Bouvier des Flandres, the Bernese Mountain dog is very quick to learn and obedient, is a very alert watchdog and a guarddog by nature and exceptionally good with children.

A small number of Bernese Mountain Dogs are not guarddogs by nature.

This dog likes to lean against and be constantly beside a member of the family it feels closest to.

Bernese Mountain Dogs need to be socialized very early to counteract a tendency to be slightly timid.

With strangers they are reserved. With strange dogs they are no problem.

They are obedient and easygoing, and gentle with everyone except intruders.

Fairly inactive indoors, they adjust well to apartment life.

Needs a lot of outdoor exercise.

Bernese Mountain Dogs may snore and they overeat if allowed.

One of the larger breeds the males average 80-105 pounds. The females average 75-90 pounds.

Their special skills include hauling, herding, and guarding. They need grooming twice a week for about 15 minutes.
