The Collie: Loving, Loyal and Devoted Companions

Collies are one of the most gentle dogs I have ever met. Maybe that's one reason why they are one of my favorite dog breeds.

My mom had a Smooth Collie years ago named Belle. She says Belle was very smart, extremely obedient, and a terrific companion.

There are two varieties of Collies: Smooth, like Belle, and Rough, like Lassie. Both learn quickly, are great watchdogs, and great family dogs. They are a large dog breed. Males weigh 60-75 pounds and females weigh 50-60.

Collies are very social and family oriented dogs and much prefer to be a house pet. In fact, they will not thrive as well if kept outdoors. They will be healthier, happier and cleaner if they are allowed to be inside with the family.

Since Collies were first seen in the show ring in England in 1860 Collies have changed in appearance. They have doubled in size, their coat has become thicker, their head leaner and lighter, and colors have been standardized. But their loyalty and devotion have remained the same.

The shepherds of Scotland 100 years ago and more needed a dog that would be gentle with the sheep, trustworthy to bring the flock in, obedient, and with a willing attitude. So throughout the years the Collies with the best herding traits were kept and bred, giving us the Collie of today.

Collies need to be groomed several times a week, especially the Rough Collies. They need to be socialized early in life and spend several minutes every day being trained.

They must not be left outside on a chain, or yelled at, or hit with a hand. Gentle, regular training, and lots of love will produce a wonderful companion who will be your loyal friend for years.

Here is a video that describes the collie's temperament, training abilities, grooming requirements and more.
